Founded in Columbus, Ohio in 2017, USA has assisted with organizing and expanding sports of all skill levels in local areas.

The first expansion of USA came in the form of Team Market Owner, Chris Allison, purchasing the rights to the professional basketball team, the Owensboro Thoroughbreds, within the TBL in 2019. Since the ownership change, the Thoroughbreds have been a complimentary asset to the community and youth programs within the city through collaboration with local schools, trainers, and leagues. Additionally, they have raised and distributed over $150,000 to local non-profits over the last three years. The organization looks to match that again this year.

Today, the United Sports Association will be announcing two new initiatives. The first is the creation of the Owensboro Sports + Entertainment Commission. In collaboration with the Owensboro Thoroughbreds and the Owensboro River Dawgs, the commission will begin laying out a five year plan to bring new professional sports teams and entertainment to the city of Owensboro. Our goal is to continue to expand opportunities for families and generate outside revenue for the city.

The second announcement is the collaboration and unification of youth programs within the city of Owensboro. United Sports was founded to streamline opportunities for athletes of all abilities, ages, genders, and skill levels. Our goal is to work collectively with existing programs to bolster participation, streamline information, enact program continuity, and expand opportunity for all.

We do this in collaboration with our local program partners. Programs from five different sports: basketball (Work With Wilford, Upward Basketball), football (Kids Football League), baseball (Owensboro River Dawgs), volleyball (Audubon Volleyball Association, Owensboro Select Volleyball), and soccer (Owensboro Street Soccer) have already joined in on discussions to bridge this gap. Collectively we, with more to come, will work together to build this system and develop youth athletics into a new United Sports facility.
Programming collaboration will begin as early as January. More information will be shared in the coming weeks. Follow us at www.facebook.com/playowensboro.

T’Breds Home Opener A Sight To See https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2022/03/22/tbreds-home-opener-a-sight-to-see/ https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2022/03/22/tbreds-home-opener-a-sight-to-see/#respond Tue, 22 Mar 2022 15:24:55 +0000 https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/?p=1872

If you stepped foot into the Sportscenter on Sunday, you were guaranteed to see a spectacle.

It was the home opener for The Basketball League’s Owensboro Thoroughbreds, who hosted the Indiana All-Americans for an early-afternoon tilt. The environment inside the building was palpable, to say the least.

The Owensboro Drum Line was in the upper deck, kicking up some noise. Cheerleaders were hyping up the crowd as spectators filed in. And the music playing over the Sportscenter’s audio system was nonstop.

All of that came before the ball was ever tipped, too.

And once the game began, the Thoroughbreds battled. Despite playing their third game in three days, Owensboro had an opportunity at the victory before eventually succumbing 107-104. The Thoroughbreds showed why they started the year 3-0 and now sit at 4-2 — with the potential to be 6-0 had some late-game situations Friday and Sunday gone their way.

In essence, Sunday afternoon at 1215 Hickman Avenue was more of an event than just a basketball game.

And, for the Thoroughbreds to remain successful, their home-opening recipe is the one to follow.

At the professional basketball level, there’s much more to game day than simply rolling the balls out and playing. The on-floor product has to be both good and exciting — which the Thoroughbreds are — but the atmosphere also needs to be engaging and it needs to be exciting.

Check and check.

“I think that’s the largest crowd we’ve ever had in my three years here,” Thoroughbreds head coach Mark Anderson said after Sunday’s contest. “It was fun. It was a great environment. Hopefully, a lot of people will come back after they saw the product.”

With point guard Darhius Nunn leading the way, Owensboro features a deep and talented group that plays hard and competes. The Thoroughbreds get up and down the floor, they play defense, and they share the ball — all important aspects to attracting a consistent fanbase and building a winning contingent.

Along with that, the franchise and team owner Chris Allison have made an effort to engage with the community on an unprecedented scale, and there’s no reason why that shouldn’t be reciprocated. Everything from the planned entertainment — like Corey Wilford emceeing shooting contests, a taekwondo exhibition or a group dance during breaks in the action — down to the courtside seating for VIPs was executed in a first-class manner.

Even the pre-game festivities such as the pre-game hype video and team introductions made the Sportscenter seem bigger than it really is. And that’s not a small building, to begin with.

It also says something when, despite the Thoroughbreds losing a game that ultimately came down to the final buzzer, there were countless children and their parents waiting in line to buy team memorabilia or get autographs from their favorite players — and each of them were warm and accommodating to sign posters, pose for pictures or even just chat. In fact, they probably got as much out of the experience following a hard-fought loss as anyone else did.

The only downside of Thoroughbreds home games? There aren’t enough of them early in the season.

Nine of Owensboro’s first 10 games are road contests, with the next home date scheduled for April 8 against the Indiana All-Americans. After that, however, they’ll play at the Sportscenter for 11 of their final 14 games.

“We don’t play at home a lot at the beginning of the year,” Anderson said, “but we end with a lot of games here in the second half of the season, which is going to be nice.”

If the Thoroughbreds organization continues to bring the same energy and effort that it did for the home opener, that means there’s plenty of excitement to come.

The 2022 Owensboro Thoroughbreds Roster https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2022/02/26/the-2022-owensboro-thoroughbreds-roster/ https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2022/02/26/the-2022-owensboro-thoroughbreds-roster/#respond Sat, 26 Feb 2022 21:22:28 +0000 https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/?p=1635

Last Thursday night, a confluence of storms rolled into the downtown Owensboro area, going from a warmer day to a blustery, frigid night.

But that wasn’t the only thing to blow into town … 17 basketball players hoping to catch on with the Owensboro Thoroughbreds showed up as well, along with owner Chris Allison, head coach Mark Anderson, and assistant coach Brad Zellner.

It was all a microcosm of how the Thoroughbreds ended last season, going cold against the Kokomo Bobkats despite playing Game Two in an arena that had no air conditioning, but was as packed as a playoff game should be.

The run would be finished a couple of days later in Indianapolis, but like every spring, the Thoroughbreds begin anew.

With training camp beginning bright and early on the morning of February 18th, Coaches Anderson and Zellner were up with the morning sun, registering and welcoming their training camp participants and hopefuls, and getting started with their first practice at 8 a.m. sharp.

The turnout featured returning players such as Jaiveon Eaves and Darhius Nunn from last year’s squad, and saw the return of Davon Hays from the 2020 lineup.

Not only did Eaves return looking more bulked up than he did a year ago, but one could personally recognize Eaves first by hearing his energetic and steady clap, encouraging everyone at the camp like he infectiously did all season last year. Basketball purists might recall Eaves was a backcourt teammate of the Memphis Grizzlies’ Ja Morant when both were at Murray State.

Nunn, who hails from Palm Beach Atlantic, looks well polished in his return as the steady-Eddie point guard from a year ago, looking even better and more ready this time around, and poised to lead this team from the outset.

Hays – of Southeast Louisiana fame – fit right into the flow like he’d never left the ‘Boro, and it’s that consistency that Allison and Anderson looked for in bringing him back to The O.

One of the things that the ‘Breds seemed to lack last season was a beefy presence inside the paint, which big men like Albert Jackson and Alexander Arellano seem to bring. Jackson is a University of Georgia product, while Arellano comes over from Heidelberg.

The bright part of the morning came, as last year’s leading scorer – Corey Wilford – quietly walked into the gym at First Baptist and watched the morning workouts. An injury shelved Wilford last season, possibly ending his basketball playing career.

You can still see Wilford’s love of the game, and his presence as well as his encouraging words energized the team. His camaraderie with the other athletes loosened up the gym, bringing some pizzazz in the afternoon session, where Wilford was offering words of encouragement to all and featured his game emcee skills.

Where the morning session seemed to show who had the energy and who hadn’t been on the court in a while, the evening session had every donning their best kicks, better knowing Coach Anderson’s and Coach Zellner’s routines and expectations, and streaking up and down the court at Burns Middle School more than they did that morning.

The evening session seemed to bring out even more hopefuls, but with a limited number of days until the team tips off the first game of the season on Friday, March 5th against Toledo Glass City in Toledo, the coaches had their work cut out for them.

That’s right, in the TBL, teams have about 11-12 days to field a team, trim the roster, and initiate the season with their systems in place.

That includes the teams that Owensboro will compete against: Toledo, Detroit, Kentucky, Lebanon, Medora, Indy, Flint, and yes, those Kokomo Bobkats, who they’ll rematch with in that same gymnasium on March 25th.

The Owensboro Thoroughbreds’ home opener is on Sunday, March 20th against the Indy All-Americans.

The roster has been pared down to 10 players who will play home and away games, and an additional two (*) who will dress for home games. Those players are:

  • Alexander Arellano
  • Darhius Nunn
  • Davon Hays
  • Jaiveon Eaves
  • Jarin Hilson
  • Marty Hill
  • Montel James
  • P.J. Savoy
  • Sam Kearns
  • Marshall Griffith*
  • Ricky Shuford*

The 2022 Owensboro Thoroughbreds are set to show what bouncing back truly means. If this training camp is any indication, place your bets early and often because these Thoroughbreds are off and running.

Thoroughbreds Select Hill, Johnson In Draft https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2022/02/11/thoroughbreds-select-hill-johnson-in-draft/ https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2022/02/11/thoroughbreds-select-hill-johnson-in-draft/#respond Fri, 11 Feb 2022 21:28:12 +0000 https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/?p=1642

By Joseph Russell, Messenger-Inquirer

The Owensboro Thoroughbreds added a pair of rookies to its roster for the 2022 campaign by selecting guards Marty Hill and TaJuan Johnson in the TBL draft this week.

Hill, a former standout at the University of Evansville, was taken seventh overall. Though the Thoroughbreds had several options at that position, third-year coach Mark Anderson said, Owensboro ultimately selected the 6-foot-5 for both his on-court ability and his previous playing experience.

“We like his length,” Anderson said. “We like what he does out on the court. The fact that he has a year of overseas experience also played into it and playing in the Missouri Valley (Conference). That went into our decision.

“It was a tough one, because we had earmarked two to three guys that were still available that we could have easily gone with, but we felt that what Marty brings with his experience and playing, that it was going to be a good fit for us.”

Hill, who spent 2019-20 playing in Slovakia, averaged 5.2 points and 3.1 rebounds in 16.1 minutes per game over 20 contests for BK Levicki.

Before turning professional, Hill started all 32 games of his senior season for Evansville and finished second on the team with 11.5 points per outing. He also grabbed 3.9 rebounds per game and shot 45.1% from the field, including a team-best 41.7% from 3-point range.

The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native scored a career-best 24 points for the Purple Aces in an 82-77 win over Drake, knocking down 5-of-7 shots from beyond the arc in the process.

Having a player from nearby Evansville on the roster, Anderson added, also creates another connection between the Thoroughbreds and the community.

“He’s close to the area, and he knew a little bit about Owensboro when we talked,” Anderson said. “It’s a name recognition.”

In the second round of the TBL draft, Owensboro selected Johnson, a 6-3 guard out of Central Baptist College, where he averaged 9.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 24.3 minutes over 21 games.

Before that, the Maywood, Illinois, native posted 11.4 points and 5.1 rebounds in 17 games at William Penn University in Iowa. As a sophomore in 2017-18, Johnson was named an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American after averaging 15.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game in 29 contests at Georgia Highlands College.

The Thoroughbreds are scheduled to open the regular season March 5 at Toledo Glass City in Ohio. They’ll open the year with five consecutive road contests before their home opener against the Indy All-Americans on March 20.

Thoroughbreds Win Home Opener Over Columbus Condors https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2021/04/17/thoroughbreds-win-home-opener-over-columbus-condors/ https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2021/04/17/thoroughbreds-win-home-opener-over-columbus-condors/#respond Sun, 18 Apr 2021 01:20:00 +0000 https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/?p=1506 With about 6.0 left on the clock, the Owensboro Thoroughbreds went up the floor as the game was tied 116-116. Corey Wilford received the pass and then drained a 3-pointer to put the Thoroughbreds up 119-116 with 0.9 left before the Condors missed an attempt at the other end before the buzzer.

The win sent the Owensboro Sportscenter crowd home happy as Wilford was excited to play in front of the fans again.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “I was hoping we’d pack it all the way out, that didn’t happen but we’re thankful for everybody that came out here, showing us support. I know at times we didn’t look so good as a team but we got that win.”

The shot just before the buzzer wasn’t the first Wilford has had in his hoops career and certainly won’t be the last but when the game was on the line, he knew he had to step up.

“Give me the ball,” he said was his thought. “I’m never scared to take the big shot. I live with the miss just as much as I live with the make. I’m just never scared to take that shot.

Owensboro led 41-28 after the first but a strong second frame from the Condors make it 58-56 Thoroughbreds at the break.

After building a double-digit lead in the third, the Thoroughbreds led the Condors right back in the game until the game-winning shot in the closing seconds.

Former Murray State Racer Jaiveon Eaves led the Breds with 27 points while Wilford added 25. Darhius Nunn also had a big game with 20 points.

Cody Ballard finished with a game-high 42 points to lead Columbus.

Wilford said the team has big plans for this season and he thinks the community is going to like what they see.

“I want everybody to understand we have an amazing owner in Chris Allison,” he said. “Chris is doing everything in his power to make this work and he owns 5-6 teams in the TBL. He’s putting so much effort into making Owensboro stand out. We just want people to support him and we’re here to support the community. We hope the community does the same.”

Owensboro plays Sunday against at the Sportscenter against the Detroit Hustle.

Thoroughbreds Off To The Races https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2021/04/10/thoroughbreds-off-to-the-races/ https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/2021/04/10/thoroughbreds-off-to-the-races/#respond Sun, 11 Apr 2021 01:18:00 +0000 https://owensborothoroughbreds.com/?p=1503 TBL team split road games, plays at home Friday

The Owensboro Thoroughbreds are ready to run.

After taking a 128-121 win over the Dayton Flight and falling, 113-112, to the Columbus Condors in a pair of road games during the opening weekend of The Basketball League 2021 season, the Thoroughbreds will make their home debut Friday when they take on Columbus in a rematch at the Sportscenter.

According to Owensboro coach Mark Anderson, fans won’t have to wait long to see what his squad can do.

“You’re going to see good ball movement, you’re going to see players play for each other, and you’re going to see fast-paced action,” Anderson said. “You’re going to see high-level basketball, this year especially.

“It’s a unique year, in that many of the guys who played overseas last year can’t go back because of COVID restrictions, so that’s really a boost for our league.”

Anderson anticipates a quick kinship to be built between his players and Thoroughbreds fans, as well.

“I think the expectations are high,” he said. “The group we’ve assembled is a great group of men, on and off the court. One of the things we look at in this league, and especially here in Owensboro — are they going to be out in the community, and are they willing to do it?

“Last year, we had four, five, six elementary school visits that turned into almost all-school assemblies. It was fun for us and fun for the kids, to answer their questions and sign things. One thing that makes our league different is the players are so accessible in the community and after games.”

So, who can Owensboro fans expect to see on the floor?

Hopkinsville native and Thoroughbreds mainstay Corey Wilford is a high-scoring guard who Anderson expects to put up points in bunches, alongside backcourt mate Matt Hart. Wilford scored 20.9 points per game last season and made a league-leading 39 3-pointers on 39% shooting from distance as the Thoroughbreds went 6-7.

“This team has a high basketball IQ, and we’re led by point guard Matt Hart,” Anderson said. “He’s a good floor distributor, doesn’t get rattled.

“Corey Wilford is a very clutch shooter, and he can really score the ball. I trust him out there on the court.”

Down low, the Thoroughbreds feature big men Meshack Lufile, a 6-foot-8, 250-pounder who has played in NBL Canada and overseas, and Chuck Ogbodo, a 6-10, 230-pounder who played four years of collegiate basketball at UNC Wilmington.

Returning on the wings will be Evan Milligan, a former Kentucky Wesleyan Panther who averaged 11.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game for the Thoroughbreds last year, and Donavan Griffith, who posted 11.6 points and five rebounds per outing last season.

Also joining the team will be Michael Davenport, a 6-5 veteran who played for Anderson in Jamestown.

Among the team’s rookies will be point guard Hunter Noffsinger, who starred at Muhlenberg County High School and later suited up at KWC, along with Jaiveon Eaves, a former Madisonville North Hopkins star who scored 11.1 points per game last season at Murray State.

Darhius Nunn, a heady point guard, and 6-8 high-energy forward Kameron Moore round out the Thoroughbreds’ batch of rookies.

“That gives us quality guys off the bench,” Anderson said of his team’s depth. “That’s something you need at this level. Forty-eight minutes is a very long game, and it’s physical.”

Tipoff for Friday’s home opener is set at 7 p.m., and it will be “Bluegrass, Bourbon, BBQ + Basketball” theme night at the Sportscenter. Fans will also get the chance to win a Thoroughbreds jersey, with a different one raffled off at every home game.

Just 13 games into the 2020 season, the Owensboro Thoroughbreds year was ended due to covid, but they’re back for the 2021 campaign and excited to get back to playing in the Owensboro Sportscenter

“We were actually talking about that the other day, me and coach Anderson, the day they actually cancelled the season due to covid,” said Corey Wilford, shooting guard for the Thoroughbreds. “We’ve been out of basketball ever since, and we just had our first scrimmage two days ago. It just felt great being back on the court. I enjoyed it. I loved it.”

But for as much excitement as there is to be back on the court, coaches and players are equally enthusiastic to be back in the Owensboro community.

“We look for good men on the court that also do the things off the court, being in the community, the school visits if we’re allowed this year,” said Mark Anderson, head coach and general manager of the Owensboro Thoroughbreds. “Last year, our school visits were unbelievable. They turned into almost like whole school assemblies in the elementary.”

Last year, the Thoroughbreds got to interact with students at Country Heights, Deer Park Elementary, and many other schools to emphasize the importance of education, even as an athlete.

The team also sponsored the 3-on-3 Confidence League at the Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club where they had more than 170 kids participate, and on the court, tri-state citizens will get the opportunity to see some familiar faces that played in Owensboro, Evansville, and Muhlenberg.

“We have Hunter Noffsinger from KWC. We have Evan Mulligan, who’s from Evansville and played at KWC, and also Jaiveon Eaves, who played at Murray State.”

And when you go to an Owensboro Throughbreds game, the players guarantee you’ll see great games and highlight plays.

“They’re going to see a lot of excitement, a lot of up and down, a lot of threes, a lot of dunking, a lot of excitement, a lot of stuff for the kids to do during the game breaks, during timeouts and during halftime.”

The Thoroughbreds tip off their season this Saturday in Dayton, and they’ll take the court at the Sportscenter next Friday against the Columbus Condors where they’ll offer mouthwatering bbq and dazzling dunks.

(WFIE) – Owensboro may be home to the Thoroughbreds, but on Monday in Evansville, the team stepped in front of the camera for Media Day to prep for the upcoming season.

The Thoroughbreds are a minor league team based out of Owensboro competing in the “TBL” or the Basketball League.

The team was founded in 2017, where they went 14-and-19 in the NAPB.

After a season cut short by COVID-19 in 2020, head coach Mark Anderson says the guys are ready to go and playback in front of their home crowd.

”The people of Owensboro are fabulous, to get going it’s been a long time since we had to shut down last year due to COVID halfway thru the season. So we’re gonna get going, and we’re looking forward to it,” said Anderson. “We’ve assembled a great team of men here that can play basketball, and they’re good on and off the court. Those are the things that we look for so we’re ready to go.”

The Thoroughbreds will tip off their schedule Tuesday in an exhibition in Kokomo.
